Lamu County Boosts The Local Fishing Industry By Reviving The FAZA Ice Plant To Avoid Post Harvest Losses

The County Government of Lamu has partnered with the Kenya Climate Smart Agriculture Programme to revive the Faza ice plant which will help 2,000 fishermen preserve their fish. This strategy comes after a record of losses from fish farmers in Rasini village who depend on fish selling as their only source of income. Without a refrigerating machine, the fishermen have to either sell their harvest at lower prices or give them away for fear of the fish rotting. The KSh 9.8 million ice plant will have two flake ice generating machines, each with a capacity of two tonnes of flake ice per day. This will be integrated with a cold room capable of holding fish at -20°C.To boost fish output, the County is also planning to distribute fishing lines, gill nets, flippers, eco-sounders/fish finders, GPS, deep freezers, and cooler boxes, among other fishing equipment. This will empower local fishermen and ultimately boost the economy and health of residents in Lamu County.

Faza and neighbouring villages namely; Kiungu, Mkokoni, Chundwa,  Siyu, Pate, Kizingitini and Boyi have also benefited from the County Government tapped water flagship project aimed at  reducing water borne illnesses. This project targets to provide piped water to over 687 households in all villages. The County is embracing use of solar energy in both projects, for water distillation and fish preservation to reduce the cost of running the projects.
