KIRINYAGA COUNTY IMPROVES FOOD SECURITY THROUGH THE WEZESHA KIRINYAGA ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT PROGRAM.

Nyeri

The County Government of Kirinyaga has a population of 610,411 people according to the 2019 census with majority of them relaying on agriculture as the main source of income. To empower this population, the County Government has designed various projects under the Wezesha Kirinyaga Empowerment Program to provide training, equipment, seedlings and needed support to local farmers. The County is working on improving food security by supporting aquacultural activities including distributing 254,000 fish fingerlings to over 250 farmers. These efforts are aimed at ensuring that families have a balanced diet and that fish is affordable for residents of Kirinyaga and neighboring Counties.

The Wezesha Kirinyaga Economic Empowerment Program has supported each of the 32 community groups with 1,250 chicks (layers) hence producing one million eggs per month. This initiative has improved the living standards of farmers from over 600 households who rear chicken. For selling purposes, the County through the Kirinyaga Investment Development Authority markets all the eggs on behalf of the farmers. The marketing and packaging of the eggs in proper market- required standards has increased demand both locally and in neighboring Counties. Through the Kirinyaga Agricultural Training Center, Animal Production Unit, the County manufactures chicken feed and distributes to all local farmers. The Animal Production Unit produces 220 bags of 70kg feeds on a daily basis. This strategy is aimed at ensuring that farmers have access to subsidized and quality chicken feed.
