When Nandi Governor Stephen Sang recently underwent a minor surgical procedure at Kapsabet County Referral Hospital, the moment sparked national attention and renewed conversation around confidence in County healthcare systems.

The procedure also brought attention to the growing capacity of County hospitals and the healthcare professionals working within them. In his message following the procedure, Governor Sang acknowledged the surgeons, anaesthetists, theatre nurses, and medical staff involved in his care, drawing attention to the teams sustaining healthcare services within public facilities.

He specifically commended General Surgeons Dr. Alfred Wanyonyi and Dr. Jocelyne Kapting’ei, anaesthetists Benjamin and Elizabeth, as well as theatre nurses Rael, Risper, Charles, and Nkaduda, among others, for their professionalism and dedication.

Under Governor Sang’s administration, Nandi County has continued investing in healthcare infrastructure, specialized services, digital systems, and community health programmes aimed at improving access to quality healthcare closer to residents. At Kapsabet County Referral Hospital, investments in modern diagnostic equipment, theatre infrastructure, and digital health systems have strengthened the hospital’s capacity to deliver specialized healthcare services within the County. The County has also achieved full digitization of all 155 health facilities through deployment of more than 1,200 digital devices to strengthen patient management and service delivery, according to a 2026 County Government of Nandi update on healthcare digitization.

The impact of these investments is increasingly being reflected in health outcomes, as highlighted in Nandi’s State of the County Address (SOCA) 2025 report. Skilled deliveries have increased from 36.9 per cent to 65 per cent, positioning Nandi among the top four safest Counties to give birth in Kenya. Immunization coverage has also improved from 58.2 per cent to 72.2 per cent, while HIV prevalence has reduced from 2.8 per cent to 2 per cent.

The report further notes that access to specialized healthcare services has expanded following operationalization of the Mosoriot theatre in March 2025, where at least 186 surgeries have already been conducted locally, reducing the need for referrals outside the County. Blood transfusion services at Mosoriot have also helped address emergency referral challenges.

At the community level, over 1,520 Community Health Promoters are currently active on the electronic Community Health Information System (eCHIS), supporting household-level healthcare services and referrals across the County.

For many residents, the Governor’s decision to seek treatment at a County facility reflected growing confidence in the County’s healthcare system and the progress made in strengthening public hospitals.

“The Governor being treated here gives people confidence and assurance that our public health facilities are working and can be trusted,” said Kiprotich, a resident of Kapsabet town.

Governor Sang reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening healthcare services across the County, noting that the County Government will continue investing in equipping new facilities, improving hospital infrastructure, and expanding specialized medical services.

“If the Governor can confidently receive treatment here, then it means the hospital is serving people well and we too can trust it,” said Christine Jelagat, who had visited Kapsabet County Referral Hospital for outpatient services.

The successful procedure demonstrated how continued investments in infrastructure, technology, and healthcare workers are strengthening the ability of County hospitals to deliver quality specialized care closer to wananchi.
