Bringing Healthcare Closer: Murang’a County Telemedicine Programme

Virtual consultation between a patient and a doctor using telemedicine

Murang’a County is transforming healthcare through digital innovation. With a rising burden of chronic Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), the County launched a Telemedicine Programme that allows patients to consult doctors remotely via video calls, mobile apps, and online messaging.

The initiative began after research with Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology revealed high NCD prevalence in the County. In August 2024, a Telemedicine Health Conference brought together partners, and by September, the programme was piloted in 38 health facilities with support from BYON8 and HealthX. After six successful months, the programme expanded to more facilities.

A telemedicine hub at Muriranjas Sub-County Hospital coordinates services, reaching over 25,000 patients. Patients register at local dispensaries, access specialists remotely, and benefit from follow-up care, all at the standard consultation fee of Ksh.100. Solar-powered facilities ensure uninterrupted service even during power outages.

The programme has reduced travel costs, improved continuity of care, and enabled patients to access specialists without long journeys. Routine tests and medication refills help manage NCDs effectively, while follow-up calls ensure patients stay on track with their care.
