Kisumu pioneers drug delivery using drones to enhance timely universal health access

Kisumu

The County Government of Kisumu was desperate to find a viable solution for buffer stock to cover KEMSA delays and stockouts, improve availability of blood and generally improve service delivery, following lessons learnt during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns.

Following the Lake Region Economic Bloc (LREB) Governors’ visit to Rwanda in 2021, where they witnessed drone delivery of medical supplies, the County Government of Kisumu signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in 2022 with Zipline to stock and distribute blood, routine vaccines, anti-rabies, anti-venom, and emergency drugs. The County launched the first-ever drone delivery of medical supplies in Kenya on Monday, January 30, 2023, to enhance timely access to health services, thus saving lives. The County makes an average of 40 drone deliveries per day.
