Kilifi County is tackling childhood malnutrition head-on with its homegrown ‘Muswa’ porridge programme. Launched in 2022 under the County Nutrition Action Plan (2024–2029), the initiative provides specially fortified porridge to all 813 public Early Childhood Development Centers (ECDEs), reaching over 50,000 young learners.
Each cup of ‘Muswa’ delivers essential nutrients such as protein, calcium, iron, zinc, and iodine, supporting healthy growth, cognitive development, and immunity. The programme not only combats stunting but also keeps children in school, reduces the burden on families, and lays the foundation for a healthier, more educated future workforce.
“This is more than just a feeding programme; it is an investment in the future of Kilifi. By taking charge of our unique nutritional challenges, we are exercising the very essence of devolution, using our resources and understanding of local needs to create effective, sustainable solutions,” said H.E. Gideon Maitha Mungaro, Governor of Kilifi County.
