The County Government of Kajiado through its Department of Tourism and Culture has started the Ushanga Initiative to empower women by offering training classes on beadwork. This initiative seeks to transform the bead industry into a viable enterprise that would generate economic benefits as well as provide a sustainable livelihood for the women and young girls in pastoral communities. In 2021, the County organized a one-week training on how to use modern beading machines for women in Kuku, Kimana, Entonet Lenkisim, Mbirikani and Rombo wards. During the training, these women were provided with accommodation, food, water and beads. The strategy to accommodate and cater to trainees attracted over 150 women from all villages in Kajiado South. To sustain the project, the trained women are mobilized to form cooperative societies to enable them access government funds.
