How Kericho County Referral Hospital Reduced The Turnaround Time For Lab Results By Increasing Lab Personnel
Kericho County Referral Hospital is the only Level Five hospital in the Kericho County, serving as the main referral centre to seven public sector hospitals and 136 primary care facilities. It also serves residents from other neighbouring counties. The hospital has a staff of 400, spread across 32 departments, and receives 450–500 patients per day, about a third of whom require laboratory services.
By April 2017, the laboratory had a total of 14 workers, and serving between 70 and 100 clients per day. Over time, it became increasingly apparent that an observed shortage of skilled laboratory personnel was causing long waiting time for results, with clients sometimes spending between three and four hours waiting.
The management took the decision to increase the number of laboratory personnel, to improve the lab’s efficiency and cut down on the turnaround time for the delivery of laboratory results.
