Changing The Fortunes For Potato Farmers In Nyandarua County
The county government of Nyandarua has partnered with the Embassy of Ireland to initiate a capacity building project in potato farming. Through this venture, smallholder farmers will be able to increase their returns following capacity building trainings that will be offered.
Potato farmers will also be facilitated to access affordable certified potato seeds as well linking farmers with markets for their produce.
Snags in land preparation methods, incorrect use of farm inputs, inappropriate use of pesticides, and lack of adequate and timely information to farmers, packaging have been major causes of low productivity in the county.
The Irish potato is the second most important crop in the county and is cultivated by more than 70 per cent of Nyandarua residents.
